Aquaculture Directory
Aquaculture, the business of farming aquatic plants and animals, is fast becoming an integral
part of the Maryland agricultural economy. Since 1988, when the first aquaculture legislation
was passed, most of Maryland's aquafarmed products have been grown in fresh water ponds.
Today, however, this trend is slowly changing to include intensive culture in recirculating tank
systems. This new technology provides a greater opportunity for year 'round availability of farm
raised fish.
Currently, Maryland boasts more than 200 aquafarms producing a wide variety of finfish,
shellfish and plants. The 2000 Aquafarm Products Directory represents those who are
interested in advertising their products to consumers, retailers and wholesalers.
